Cyril Pawsey (second from left) at the opening of Epsom Coaches, 80th Anniversary Open Day – 2000

It is with great sorrow, we announce the passing of Cyril Pawsey at the age of 90.  Cyril died suddenly whilst in his garden in Bognor Regis, on Tuesday 30th July. We send our sincere condolences to Cyril’s partner Betty and to his family.

Cyril Pawsey worked for two of the best known family business’s in Epsom at the same time!  Long a resident of Epsom, Cyril lived for many years in West Ewell, raising his family whilst working for Furniss, the local heating oil provider and a long time stalwart of Epsom High Street. Cyril was well known for his immaculate tanker as he delivered heating oil and and diesel to local company’s and residential homes.   Cyril’s job at Furniss kept him busy during the winter months, when the demand was greatest and he switched to driving coaches for Epsom Coaches during the summer. An arrangement that was to be in place for over 30 years.

Cyril was immensely popular as a driver, he preferred the coastal runs and would often take his bike with him, to keep fit between journeys. He also looked after his coach, like he did his tanker, keeping it spotless.  After retirement, Cyril continued his long association with Epsom Coaches, travelling once a week from his retirement location in Bognor Regis, to tend Epsom Coaches depot, keeping that spotless, with not a weed or any dirt to be found when he had finished!  In between, Cyril could be found delivering new cars for dealers across the country on a small transporter and driving the cars as well. Cyril could always be trusted to ensure someones pride and joy was delivered safely and in pristine condition.

In his spare time, Cyril was a great fan of caravan holidays. He towed his caravan across all parts of the UK, enjoying holidays with Betty. Later, he switched to his camper, enjoying day trips and holidays alike.  Cyril was active right up until the end and we can take comfort that we had the honour of knowing and working with a man, for whom nothing was too much trouble, a skillful driver and a perennial favorite among his many friends and customers. He will be sorely missed.

Cyril Pawsey’s funeral will be held at Chichester Crematorium on Friday 14th August. Due to the Pandemic restriction, attendance is for family only. However, donations to Wessex Heartbeat, in Cyril’s memory can be made via Reynolds Funeral Directors, Bognor Regis.  www.reynoldsfunerals.co.uk
